The Sunshine Mile Overlay Workshop
May 18, 2019, 9AM-12PM
First Assembly of God, auditorium
1749 E. Broadway Blvd.
The Rio Nuevo District and Project for Public Spaces (“PPS”) invite you to help shape the future of The Sunshine Mile and its influence on the neighborhoods adjoining the Broadway Corridor (the “Corridor”). This workshop will help develop zoning tools to encourage land use and open spaces for public and private placemaking along The Sunshine Mile – Euclid Avenue to Country Club Road – and strengthen the Corridor as a valuable community, city and regional asset.
Background: In 2017, at the request of the Rio Nuevo District, PPS conducted an extensive community engagement program in response to the planned widening of Broadway Boulevard. The program involved engaging stakeholders through a series of interviews and workshops with the goal of establishing a common land use/placemaking vision for the Corridor. Based on what PPS observed, the community’s vision for energizing the Corridor includes catering to the pedestrian experience, creating a series of destinations and capturing the unique identity of The Sunshine Mile.
Moving Forward: Picking up where they left off in 2017 with an articulated vision for The Sunshine Mile, PPS will be conducting a new stakeholder workshop to help identify subdistricts with unique characteristics along the Corridor and gain an understanding of the land uses that should be encouraged in each of those subdistricts. The results of the workshop will influence the creation of what is called an “overlay zone,” and an economic development strategy that will give property owners a variety of optional quality-enhancing development incentives for improving their properties and enhancing the adjoining neighborhoods in the process.
Please note that these discussions will focus on land use and not the actual roadway widening project. For comments and questions related to the Broadway Improvement Project, please visit: www.broadwayboulevard.info.
We invite you to attend the workshop and participate in a series of round table discussions about the types of activities and land uses you think would contribute to The Sunshine Mile becoming even more of a community asset. We hope you can join us!
