Completed in 2016, renovations to the Tucson Convention Center include new locker rooms, sound and video system, renovated bathrooms, lighting and interior wall upgrades, new press box, weight room facilities, concession stand and seat upgrades. These upgrades assisted in bringing the new Roadrunners Hockey team to Tucson, which has enjoyed a warm reception and has lead to discussions regarding new sports teams opportunities in the region.

In May 2018, the Rio Nuevo Board was approached about the possibility of adapting the TCC arena for an Arena Football League Team. Subject to the team, that has yet to be identified, reaching agreements with the league, the City of Tucson, the TCC and Rio Nuevo, the Board authorized its attorney to move forward with procuring up to $400,000 in capital improvements.
